Clinical Informatics

Clinical informatics is the field of clinical healthcare that drives increased efficiency, safety, consistency, best practices, and effectiveness of care delivery through implementation of digital technologies of information management. Clinical Informatics personnel, “Informaticists,” all have advanced training and experience in the field, in addition to their professional background as physicians, nurses, information technology (IT) professionals, and ancillary healthcare professionals.

Key domains of clinical informatics are:

  • The Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Clinical decision support systems (CDSS)
  • Tools for reporting to oversight and regulatory bodies
  • Access and use of clinical data repositories
  • Clinical data analytics
  • Training clinical users in the use of the EHR
  • Liaison with Office of Information and Technology (OIT), Biomedical Service, Information Security Office (ISO), Privacy Office (PO), Pharmacy, Laboratory, Radiology, Patient Administration Services (PAS), other ancillary services
  • Assist OIT and ISO in control of access to the EHR
  • Facility information management strategies and implementation
  • Support research in clinical information management
  • Perform needs assessments of clinical end users and devise solution
  • Implementation of latest digital technologies
