Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital

Kinesiotherapy Service

Kinesiotherapy is the treatment of the effects of disease, injury, and congenital disorders through the use of therapeutic exercise and education. A consult from a primary care physician/provider is needed for a Veteran to receive Kinesiotherapy services.

In addition to the rehabilitation of general rehab patients, there are numerous other programs that kinesiotherapists are involved in at Hines VA Hospital. Programs include:

Spinal Cord Injury

The Kinesiotherapist provides rehabilitation in the form of:
  • Prescribed therapeutic exercise designed to achieve maximal functional independence during  the sub-acute phase of spinal cord injury or disease.
  • Transfer and ambulation activities designed to regain functional independence.  Bedside range of motion and strengthening to prevent deconditioning and maintain functional status while confined to bed rest.
  • Development and implementation of home exercise programs specific to the individual’s needs and abilities.
  • Retraining with or review of durable medical equipment use and needs.
  • Specialized training for participation in athletic events and activities.
  • Driver education and training, utilizing the most current adaptive equipment available.
Modifications are made, as necessary, to achieve desired goals and outcomes. The foundation of clinician-client rapport is based on education, instruction, demonstration, and use of therapeutic techniques and interventions to restore, improve, or maintain one’s functional abilities.
